War Horse
after Franz Marc
Yesterday, I saw a horse die –
the most fiery but obedient white Pegasus
groaned in great pain like a human
wakened from a vivid dream.
Now he is a stinking corpse.
Nights, I sleep in the meadow.
When it’s quiet, the stars open.
They are my flowers. Darling –
when you look at our garden,
think of me looking up at mine.
Have you seen the War-Comet?
Bigger than Halley’s,
it follows us over the fields of France.
It has an icy mane.
The opening poem of the sequence “War Horse,” The Treekeeper’s Tale (Seren, 2008)
