Course description
How do we know that it's probably not a good idea to
translate the Polish equivalent of "thanks in advance" (z
góry dziękuję) by the literal "thank you from the mountain"?
What happens when the translator reads the text of the
original and writes that of the translation? How far (and
how close) may the tranlator "depart" from the original
text? And are there any (written or unwritten) rules that
say what is allowed? How are we supposed to evaluate the
work of the translator? Is faithfulness the chief criterion,
or artistic beauty? This course tries to answer questions such as these. |
