Assignment types and guidelines
-
'Short Paper' (eight due).
This is a ca. 2,500-character (with spaces) analysis of a single
work (of each student's independent choice) read and/or discussed in
class since the previous Short Paper due date. A successful paper of
this type either places the work discussed in a broader context of
literary (Polish, European, or even American) tradition, or it
explores the work for its sources in the political/social environment
in which it came to life, or for its symbolism. Avoid confronting the
work with 'real life' or 'my own experience' approaches.
-
'Long paper' (two due).
This is a 10,000-character essay on a subject, again chosen by the
student, that covers many of the works read/discussed during each half
of the semester. The subject has to be presented to the instructor for
acceptance/ amendment/ advice at least a week before the deadline. The
stress should be placed on similarities, contrasts, and relationships
between the works discussed. Obviously, elements highlighted in 'Short
papers' are also important.
-
'Multimedia presentation' (one due)
This is virtually any kind of artistic or para-artistic reaction to
any (number of) texts covered in the course. The list of possible
media/genres includes your own translation of a poem's original (if
you happen to know Polish), a picture inspired by a particular poem or
theme, a Web page, a piece of music. . .
