Prose in translation

MA Course

Course Description

This course, usually offered in the first semester of the M.A. programme in translation studies, will take the students step by step through the process of translating a full-size literary text from English to Polish. The steps will include:

  • choice of the text;
  • research on the author;
  • study of other translations of the author into Polish;
  • analysis of the original;
  • writing the translation;
  • working with the editor/being the editor;
  • review of the translation.

The tasks will be performed in class and in individual study; the course relies heavily on peer evaluation and collaboration; the students themselves will perform multiple roles of the literary scholar, translator, the editor, the critic. After each task, the students will report on their progress and discuss problems with the class.

Students will be evaluated by the instructor as to their success in all of these roles.
